The Classic Chevy Symptom

Flashing Security Light,
Won't Start? Here's What It Is.

If your Chevy cranks but won't start — or won't crank at all — while a security or "Theft System" light flashes on the dash, this is almost always the anti-theft system doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Passlock & VATS — GM's Anti-Theft System, Explained
Chevrolet vehicles (especially models through the early-to-mid 2000s) use a system called Passlock or its predecessor VATS — a resistor pellet inside the ignition lock cylinder that the car reads to confirm the key is legitimate. When the system senses a mismatch — from a worn key, a failing lock cylinder, or a genuine security event — it disables the fuel system and flashes the security light as a safety measure. Sometimes leaving the key in the ON position for about 10 minutes lets the system relearn and clears the fault temporarily. If it keeps coming back, that's usually a worn ignition cylinder or key, not a mystery — and it's exactly what we diagnose and fix on-site. Call (202) 993-9919.

The Honest-Scope Rule

What We Handle On-Site —
And Where GM Draws a Hard Line

Starting with recent model years, GM tightened security requirements on some of its highest-security trucks and performance models — a factory-level authorization step that most mobile locksmiths and even many dealers don't carry. We tell you honestly which category your vehicle falls into before we ever dispatch a technician.

FAQ

Chevrolet Key Replacement —
Most Asked Questions

The questions Chevy owners in DC and Maryland ask us most.

My Chevy security light is flashing and it won't start.

Classic Passlock or VATS symptom — the anti-theft system senses a mismatch and disables the fuel system. Leaving the key in ON for about 10 minutes sometimes clears it temporarily; a recurring fault usually means a worn ignition cylinder or key. We diagnose and fix it on-site. Call (202) 993-9919.

Can you replace a lost Chevy key without the original?

Yes, for most models. We generate a new key from your VIN, cut and program it on-site. Some of the newest high-security trucks and performance models need factory-level authorization — call with your exact year and we'll tell you honestly before dispatching. Call (202) 993-9919.

Do you program fobs for Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban?

Yes, for most model years. The newest security-hardened trucks and SUVs can require factory-level authorization only certain shops carry. Call with your specific model year and we confirm honestly before dispatching. Call (202) 993-9919.

How much cheaper is a locksmith than the Chevy dealer?

Typically significantly less — and you avoid the towing fee a dead ignition or all-keys-lost situation usually requires just to reach the dealer. Exact cost depends on key type and whether you have a working key. Call (202) 993-9919 for a free quote.

Can you fix a Chevy ignition that's stuck or won't turn?

Yes. We diagnose whether it's the cylinder, a worn key, or Passlock/VATS, and repair or replace the cylinder on-site — rekeyed to your existing key where possible. See ignition repair & replacement. Call (202) 993-9919.

What Chevrolet models do you service?

The full lineup: Silverado, Colorado, Tahoe, Suburban, Traverse, Equinox, Blazer, Malibu, Cruze, Impala, Camaro, Corvette, Bolt, and older models. Coverage depends on model year — call with your specific vehicle for honest confirmation. Call (202) 993-9919.
