This is the single most misdiagnosed fault on modern Jaguars — and it costs owners real money when it's handled wrong.
The Actual Cause
"Smart Key Not Found" is usually a module software fault — not a dead or faulty key.
On many Jaguar models, the dashboard message "Smart Key Not Found", "Key Not Recognised", or "Key Not Detected" — combined with a no-start — is triggered by software corruption in the vehicle's Body Control Module (BCM) or Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM), not by a problem with the key you're holding.
The trigger is almost always the same: the main 12-volt battery went flat, was disconnected, or was replaced, or the car was jump-started improperly. The voltage interruption corrupts the module's memory, and it effectively forgets which keys are authorized. Your perfectly good key — even with a brand-new battery in it — is no longer on the list.
This is why owners buy a replacement key, wait for it to arrive, have it programmed, and still get the same error. The key was never the problem.

The battery goes flat, gets disconnected, or is replaced
This can be a dead battery in a driveway, a routine battery swap, or a bad jump start. Any significant voltage interruption can do it.

Module memory becomes corrupted
The BCM (which Jaguar also refers to as the Central Junction Box) and the KVM are highly sensitive to voltage drops. The stored key authorization data gets scrambled.

The car stops recognizing keys that worked yesterday
Dashboard shows the smart key error. The car may not crank at all. Even holding the fob against the backup start position often won't work if the module is corrupted, because the module — not the receiver — is the broken link.

Other electrical symptoms may appear alongside it
Central locking behaving strangely, remote lock/unlock not responding, dim or blank instrument cluster, or unrelated warnings. These are clues — see the next section.

These are two different modules with overlapping symptoms. Knowing which one is at fault before work begins is the difference between a targeted fix and an expensive guess.
Suspect the KVM / RFA
Keyless Vehicle Module
The smaller module that specifically handles key fob signals — keyless entry and push-button start.
→Only key recognition is affected — the smart key error and no-start

Suspect the BCM / CJB
Body Control Module
The main computer for body electronics — immobilizer, lighting, locking, wipers, windows, alarm.

→Instrument cluster blank or dim, odd warning lights
→Wipers, washer jets, or lighting behaving strangely
The good news: in the large majority of these cases the module hardware is fine — it's the software that's corrupted, and reprogramming resolves it without replacing anything. Outright module failure requiring replacement is the exception, not the rule. That's why diagnosis has to come before anyone sells you parts.

If the module has forgotten its authorized keys, a brand-new key will be forgotten just as fast. Diagnose first — you may not need a key at all.

The module hardware is rarely the actual fault, and a replacement must be programmed to your VIN anyway — a plain swap results in a no-start.

Don't attempt DIY module reprogramming
A failed or interrupted flash can leave modules permanently unusable. This is one of the genuinely unforgiving jobs on a modern vehicle.

Repeated failed start attempts drain the battery further, which is what caused the problem in the first place — and can deepen the fault.

Not every Jaguar key complaint is the module issue above. These are the other causes we see, and how to tell them apart.
"Key fob stopped working after I changed the battery"
Two possibilities: the new cell is weak or seated wrong, or the fob needs resyncing after losing power. But if the car's battery was also disconnected around the same time, suspect the module fault above.
"Keyless entry stopped but the car still starts"
Points toward the fob's transmit side — a weak fob battery or a failing fob — rather than the immobilizer. Usually the cheapest outcome on this page.
"I lost every key I have"
A genuine all-keys-lost. We generate a new key from the VIN and program it to the vehicle on-site, then erase the lost keys so they can't start the car. See lost car keys.
"Intermittent — works sometimes, not others"
Classic weak fob battery signature, especially if range has been shrinking. Also common when the car's own 12-volt battery is aging toward the fault above.
"I need a spare before something goes wrong"
The smartest call on this list. A spare cut and programmed while you still have a working key is dramatically simpler and cheaper than any all-keys-lost job.
"Key turns/presses but engine won't crank"
Could be immobilizer, could be starter or battery. We test rather than assume — you shouldn't pay for a key when the actual fault is elsewhere in the vehicle.

Location varies by model and year, and honestly — the location matters far less than most people think, because the module usually doesn't need removing. The fix is typically reprogramming, not replacement. Call with your year and model.
Can a regular locksmith fix this?
Many can't. This requires JLR-capable diagnostic equipment — generic OBD tools can't safely reprogram these modules and attempting it can make things worse. Ask specifically whether a shop has Jaguar-capable equipment before booking.
Does the backup key position work if the module is corrupted?
Often not. Holding the fob to the backup start location works when the fob battery is dead — but if the module itself has lost the key authorization, the backup position won't help, because the broken link is the module, not the signal.
