Which Mercedes Models Can We Service?
The Honest Answer.
Most locksmiths will not tell you this upfront. We will — because it saves everyone time. Mercedes-Benz changed its key programming system around 2014-2015 in a way that affects what any locksmith outside a dealership can do.
Mercedes models up to approximately 2014 use the FBS3 (Freiburger Benz System 3) encryption with reprogrammable NEC chips. Capitol Locksmith DC uses Abrites AVDI with Mercedes Commander — professional software that communicates directly with the EIS module to authorize new keys on-site at your location.

Mercedes-Benz introduced FBS4 encryption starting in 2014–2015. FBS4 uses 128-bit server-dependent authorization — programming a key requires a live connection to Mercedes-Benz's proprietary servers, which is only available to franchised Mercedes dealerships. No aftermarket tool currently bypasses this restriction legally.

FAQ
Mercedes Key Replacement —
Most Asked Questions
The questions DC and Maryland Mercedes owners ask most frequently.
Can a locksmith program a Mercedes key in Washington DC?
Yes — for models up to approximately 2014. Capitol Locksmith DC uses Abrites AVDI with Mercedes Commander software to program Mercedes EIS keys and Keyless-Go fobs on-site throughout Washington DC and Maryland. Mercedes models from 2015 onward use the FBS4 encryption system which requires dealer server authorization. Call (202) 993-9919 with your year and model to confirm compatibility.
Why can locksmiths only do Mercedes keys up to 2014?
Mercedes introduced the FBS4 system around 2014–2015 — a 128-bit server-dependent encryption where programming requires a live connection to Mercedes-Benz's secure servers. Only franchised dealers have access to these servers. Models up to ~2014 use FBS3, which uses a reprogrammable NEC chip that professional tools like Abrites AVDI can access directly without server authorization.
My Mercedes key fob stopped working — what should I try first?
Replace the CR2025 battery first — this is the most common cause of Keyless-Go fob failure. If the fob still does not work after a fresh battery, the fob has either lost EIS synchronization or the fob transmitter has failed. For models up to 2014, Capitol Locksmith DC can diagnose and reprogram or replace the fob on-site in DC or Maryland. Call (202) 993-9919.
I lost all my Mercedes keys — can you help without towing?
Yes — for models up to ~2014. Capitol Locksmith DC handles Mercedes all-keys-lost situations on-site throughout Washington DC and Maryland using Abrites AVDI with Mercedes Commander. We access the EIS module, create new key data, cut a new HU64 blade, and program the Keyless-Go fob — no towing required. Proof of ownership required. Call (202) 993-9919.
What does EIS mean on a Mercedes — and what does it do?
EIS stands for Electronic Ignition Switch (also called EZS in some models — Elektronisches Zündschloß). It is the central security module that controls key recognition, engine authorization, and steering lock on Mercedes-Benz vehicles. When you insert or present a Keyless-Go fob, the EIS reads and verifies the key data before allowing the engine to start. Programming a new Mercedes key means programming it into the EIS — not just cutting the blade.
Do you service the Mercedes C300, E350, ML350, and S550 in DC?
Yes — for the correct year ranges. C300 (2008–2014), E350 (2006–2016 W211/W212 generation), ML350 (2006–2014 W164), and S550 (2007–2013 W221) are all FBS3 models we service on-site throughout Washington DC and Maryland. Call (202) 993-9919 with your exact year and we confirm immediately.
How long does Mercedes key programming take on-site in DC?
Spare key or fob programming (with one working key present): 45–75 minutes from arrival. All-keys-lost Mercedes programming: 75–120 minutes due to the full EIS access and key data creation process. Our average arrival time throughout Washington DC and Maryland is 20–40 minutes from your call.
Is Mercedes key replacement cheaper with a locksmith than a dealer?
For supported models (up to ~2014), yes — significantly. A Mercedes dealer charges dealer labor rates plus key blank cost, and if your car cannot start you pay towing on top. Capitol Locksmith DC comes to your location with professional Abrites AVDI equipment and provides upfront pricing before we arrive. Call (202) 993-9919 for an immediate free quote.
