✓ Free From Kia — Don't Pay Anyone For It
Many 2011–2021 Kias were built without an engine immobilizer. Kia will fix that for free.

Certain Kia models built roughly between 2011 and 2021 with a traditional turn-key ignition — not push-button start — left the factory without an engine immobilizer, the electronic component that stops a car from starting without a valid key. A theft method spread widely on social media exploited exactly that gap.

Kia's response is a free anti-theft software upgrade, installed at authorized Kia dealerships, typically taking about 1½ to 2 hours. It reprograms the vehicle so that locking the doors with your key fob arms the alarm and activates an ignition kill — the car won't start unless it's first unlocked with the fob.

Independent research has found the upgrade cut theft rates by more than half on vehicles that received it. Beginning with the 2022 model year, immobilizers became standard across the Kia lineup, so newer vehicles aren't part of this.

If your trim can't take the software, there are alternatives
Some trims lack a compatible alarm system and can't accept the upgrade. For those, Kia has provided free steering wheel locks and a reinforced ignition cylinder protector — a sleeve that makes the cylinder much harder to remove.
⚠ The Detail Almost Nobody Mentions
The upgrade only protects you if you lock with the fob.
Here's the practical catch worth knowing: the software protection is triggered by locking the vehicle with your key fob. If you're in the habit of using the button on the door handle instead, the ignition kill may never arm — and safety researchers have pointed to this as one reason some upgraded vehicles still get targeted.

If you've had the upgrade done, get in the habit of pressing lock on the fob. It's a free, five-second change that determines whether the protection you already have actually works.
