Land Rover and Range Rover share their security architecture with Jaguar — and with it, one of the most misdiagnosed faults in modern luxury vehicles.

The Actual Cause
A flat or disconnected battery can make your Range Rover forget its own keys.

Land Rover vehicles rely on the KVM (Keyless Vehicle Module) — sometimes called the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) — to handle passive entry and push-button start. That module stores which keys are authorized to start the vehicle.

When the main 12-volt battery goes flat, gets disconnected, is replaced, or the vehicle is jump-started improperly, the voltage interruption can corrupt or desynchronize that stored key data. The result: "Smart Key Not Found," "Key Not Recognized," or "Press Brake to Start" with nothing happening — even though the key in your hand is perfectly fine.
