Key Stuck? Won't Crank?
Meet the WIN Module.

On a lot of Jeeps, your key doesn't go into a normal ignition lock at all — it goes into an electronic module that's both the ignition switch and the immobilizer receiver. When it starts failing, you get a stuck key, a no-crank, a dead dash, or a flashing security light. Here's how to tell whether that's your problem.

⚠ Safety First — Read This
If your Jeep has stalled while driving, stop driving it.
A safety recall was issued because a faulty Wireless Ignition Node can cause the engine to shut off while the vehicle is in motion — which disables power steering and power brake assistance and can affect airbag deployment. That's not an inconvenience; that's a crash risk.

If your Jeep has stalled unexpectedly at speed, or shuts off when you hit a bump, check your VIN against open recalls at the NHTSA website before arranging any repair. Recall work is performed at no cost to you, and no locksmith or independent shop should be charging you for something the manufacturer is obligated to fix.

The Part Almost Nobody Explains

What the WIN Module Actually Is

Two Jobs, One Module
Your key doesn't go into an ignition lock. It goes into a computer.

On many Jeeps, there's no traditional lock cylinder on the steering column. Instead, the key slots into the WIN module — the Wireless Ignition Node — usually mounted on the dash. That single module does two completely different jobs at once:

1. It's the ignition switch. It's what physically registers your key turning to accessory, on, and start.
2. It's the immobilizer receiver. It reads the chip in your FOBIK key and tells the vehicle whether to allow starting.

That dual role is exactly why WIN failures are so confusing to diagnose. One failing part can look like a mechanical problem (key jammed, won't turn) or an electrical one (no crank, dark dashboard, security light flashing) — and owners often chase the wrong repair for weeks. On newer Jeeps the equivalent component is called the RF Hub, which tends to show up as "Key Fob Not Detected" instead.

Self-Check

Six Signs It Might Be
Your WIN Module

None of these confirm it on their own — but if several sound familiar, this is the direction to investigate before buying keys.

🔑
Key jams or won't come out
The key physically sticks, or the vehicle won't return to OFF so you can remove it. Check the shifter is fully in Park first — most vehicles hold the key otherwise, and that's a free fix.
🔇
No crank at all
Dash may light up, but the starter never engages. You might hear a click, or nothing. Classic immobilizer-side symptom rather than a fuel or spark problem.
🚨
Security light flashing continuously
A steady flashing security indicator with a known-good key points at immobilizer lockout — the module isn't authorizing the start.
📵
Instrument cluster stays dark
Turn to ON and the cluster is completely dead except maybe the odometer. That's a strong module-side indicator.
🔄
Key turns but nothing happens
The key rotates normally, the vehicle simply doesn't respond. Starters get blamed for this constantly when the real fault is upstream.
⚠️
Shuts off over bumps or while driving
This is the safety-recall symptom. Stop driving and check your VIN for open recalls — see the warning above.

Don't Pay for the Wrong Repair

"Cranks But Won't Start" Is
a Completely Different Problem

This distinction saves real money, and it's the single most useful thing on this page for a lot of Jeep owners. Listen to what the engine actually does.

Security / Immobilizer Side
No Crank
Starter never turns over — a click or total silence
Security light flashing, or dark instrument cluster
Key stuck, or turns without effect
This is where a locksmith helps — module and key programming
Fuel Delivery Side
Cranks Strong, Never Fires
Engine spins over healthily but won't catch
On certain Jeep and Dodge models, a failed fuel pump relay inside the TIPM causes exactly this — and had its own recall
Sometimes starts after a jump, then fails again
This is a mechanic's job, not a key job — we'll tell you so

Other Reasons Jeep Owners Call Us

Trail & Weekend
Doors Off, Top Down, Key Gone
An open Wrangler on a trail or at a launch point is a great way to lose a key in tall grass or a river. A spare in a zipped pocket is the cheapest trail insurance there is — and we cut and program them at your driveway before the trip, not after. See duplicate keys.
Used Purchase
Bought It With One Key — or Zero
Used Jeeps change hands constantly, often with a single worn key and no idea how many copies exist. We cut a spare, and if the history is unknown, rekeying means old keys stop working entirely.
Water & Weather
Fob Took a Swim
Creek crossings, kayak trips, unexpected downpours with the top off — water-damaged fobs are a genuinely common Jeep call. We diagnose whether it's recoverable or needs replacement and programming.

Models We Cover

The Jeep Lineup

Coverage depends on model year and security generation — confirmed by VIN before we dispatch.

Most WIN Reports
Grand Cherokee & Commander
The models most associated with WIN module complaints, particularly across the late-2000s and early-2010s generations.
The Icon
Wrangler & Gladiator
Key replacement, fob programming, and spares — including for owners who'd rather have a backup before the next trail weekend.
Daily Drivers
Cherokee & Compass
Common across DC and Maryland. Smart key and FOBIK programming handled on-site.
Compact
Renegade
Later-generation security architecture — confirmed by VIN and model year before quoting.
Older Models
Liberty & Patriot
Earlier Sentry Key immobilizer systems — we carry the blanks and equipment for these too.
All Keys Lost
No Working Key At All
New key generated from the VIN and programmed on-site, previously registered keys erased. See lost car keys.
What we can and can't do: a replacement WIN module can't simply be swapped in — it's a security component that must be electronically programmed to the vehicle and its keys, or the Jeep won't start. Professional equipment like the Autel IM608 platform can read the vehicle security PIN and handle module and key programming, and that's what we carry. That said, some cases turn out to be mechanical, fuel-system, or recall issues that belong with a mechanic or the dealer — and we'll tell you that on the phone rather than showing up and charging you for a diagnosis you didn't need. Call with your year and model: (202) 993-9919.

FAQ

Jeep Key & Ignition Problems —
Most Asked Questions

Why is my Jeep key stuck in the ignition?
On many Jeeps the key goes into the WIN module, not a traditional lock cylinder — and a failing WIN commonly jams the key or won't return to OFF. Check the shifter is fully in Park first; most vehicles hold the key otherwise. Call (202) 993-9919.
What is the WIN module?
Wireless Ignition Node — a module that's both the ignition switch and the immobilizer receiver that reads your FOBIK key. Because it does both jobs, one failure can look mechanical (stuck key) or electrical (no crank, dark dash). Newer Jeeps use an RF Hub in a similar role.
Is there a recall on the Jeep WIN module?
Yes — issued because a faulty WIN can cause the engine to stall while driving, disabling power steering and brake assist. If your Jeep has stalled at speed, stop driving it and check your VIN for open recalls at NHTSA. Recall work is free — don't pay anyone for it.
Can a locksmith program a WIN module and keys?
Yes, with the right equipment. A replacement WIN must be programmed to the vehicle or it won't start — a plain swap fails. Professional platforms like the Autel IM608 can read the security PIN and program module and keys. Call with your year and model to confirm first.
My Jeep cranks but won't start — same problem?
Probably not. Strong cranking with no fire usually means fuel delivery, not security — on some models a failed fuel pump relay in the TIPM does exactly this and had its own recall. A security fault usually gives you no crank instead. Different repair entirely.
Which Jeep models do you service?
Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Cherokee, Compass, Renegade, Gladiator, Commander, Liberty, and Patriot. Coverage depends on model year — call with your specific vehicle for honest confirmation. Call (202) 993-9919.
