Diagnose Your Symptom

What Your Ignition Is
Trying to Tell You

Ignition problems fall into clear patterns. Find your symptom below — including the one you can fix yourself for free in the next 30 seconds.

Try this FREE fix first — it solves thousands of "key won't turn" calls
If your key suddenly won't turn at all, the most likely cause is the steering wheel lock — an anti-theft feature that engages when the wheel is turned after shutting off the engine. The fix: gently turn the steering wheel left and right while turning the key at the same time. When the wheel releases with a click, the key turns normally. Nothing was broken, and you just saved yourself a service call. If the key still won't turn after this — then it's a real cylinder problem, and that's what we fix. Call (202) 993-9919.
Symptom 1
Key Won't Turn At All
If the steering lock fix above didn't release it, the causes are a worn ignition cylinder (internal wafers no longer align), a worn key that can't lift the wafers correctly, or debris jammed in the keyway. We diagnose which one on-site — sometimes a fresh key cut to factory specs solves it without touching the cylinder.
Symptom 2
Key Hard to Turn / Sticks
The early warning stage. Worn wafers and a worn key grind against each other — and it only gets worse until total failure or a snapped key. Fixing it now is faster and cheaper than the emergency later. Never spray WD-40 into the cylinder: it attracts dirt and accelerates the wear.
Symptom 3
Key Turns, Nothing Happens
The cylinder is fine — this points to the ignition switch, the electrical component behind the cylinder, or to the starter or battery. We test which one on-site before replacing anything, so you never pay for a part you didn't need.
Symptom 4
Key Spins Freely, No Resistance
The cylinder's internal mechanism has broken — the key is turning but engaging nothing. The cylinder needs replacement. We install a new one and rekey it to your existing key so one key still runs the whole car.
Symptom 5
Engine Dies While Driving
A failing ignition switch can cut power to the engine and accessories intermittently — dangerous at highway speed. If your dash lights flicker or the engine cuts out over bumps, have the switch tested immediately. We replace switches on-site.
Symptom 6
Key Stuck or Broken in Ignition
First check the shifter is fully in Park — most vehicles hold the key otherwise. If the key is genuinely stuck or has snapped off, do not force it or try DIY extraction — see our broken key extraction service. We extract the key and repair any cylinder damage in one visit.

What We Fix

Cylinder Repair, Cylinder Replacement,
or Switch Replacement — We Do All Three

"Ignition problem" means three different repairs depending on what failed. We diagnose first, then fix only what's actually broken — that's the honest-scope rule.

Option 1 — Least Invasive
Ignition Cylinder Repair
When wear is caught early, the cylinder can often be repaired — worn wafers replaced, keyway cleaned and serviced — without replacing the whole unit. Your original key keeps working. The cheapest outcome, and the reason to call at the "sticky key" stage instead of after total failure.
Option 2 — When Repair Isn't Enough
Ignition Cylinder Replacement
A broken, seized, or glue-damaged cylinder gets replaced with a new unit. Here's our difference: a new cylinder normally comes with its own keys — meaning two keys forever. We rekey the new cylinder to match your existing key on-site, so one key still operates the doors, trunk, and ignition. Also see cylinder & ignition rekey.
Option 3 — Electrical
Ignition Switch Replacement
When the electrical switch behind the cylinder fails — no crank, accessories cutting out, engine dying while driving — we replace the switch itself. Includes safe battery disconnection, switch replacement, and full diagnostic testing of start, run, and accessory positions before we leave.
The Part Mechanics Can't Do
Transponder Programming Included
On vehicles with immobilizers (nearly everything after ~1998), ignition work often requires the keys to be re-synced to the vehicle's security system. A general mechanic replaces the part and then sends you to a dealer for programming. We carry Autel IM608 Pro II and Abrites AVDI — the programming happens in the same visit.
All Vehicle Types
Cars, Trucks, Vans & Motorcycles
Standard keyed ignitions, high-security laser-cut systems, and motorcycle ignitions — all makes and models. European vehicles included: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, and Land Rover ignition systems handled with Abrites AVDI equipment.
Caused by a DIY Attempt?
Glued or Damaged Cylinders
The #1 cause of unnecessary cylinder replacements we see: super glue from a DIY broken-key extraction attempt. A glued cylinder cannot be repaired — only replaced. If your key broke off, stop and read this first before touching it.

The Math of a Dead Ignition

Your Car Can't Drive Itself
to the Repair Shop

This is the one car problem where "mobile" isn't a convenience — it's the whole game. A vehicle with a failed ignition is immobile. Compare what actually happens next.

The Traditional Route
Mechanic or Dealership
Starts with a towing bill before any repair begins — the car cannot get there on its own
Shop queue — your car waits its turn, often a day or more
On transponder vehicles, a mechanic replaces the part but often cannot program the keys — a second stop at the dealer
New cylinder = new keys — you carry two keys forever unless someone rekeys it
You're without the car for the entire process

FAQ

Ignition Repair & Replacement —
Most Asked Questions

The questions DC and Maryland drivers ask most when the ignition acts up.

Why won't my key turn in the ignition?

Most often it's the steering wheel lock — turn the wheel gently left and right while turning the key, and it usually releases. Free fix, nothing broken. If that doesn't work, the causes are a worn cylinder, a worn key, or debris in the keyway. We diagnose the exact cause on-site. Call (202) 993-9919.

Can you replace my ignition without towing the car?

Yes — that's the entire point of mobile service. A car with a dead ignition can't be driven, so a mechanic or dealer visit starts with a towing bill. We come to your exact location in DC or Maryland with cylinders, switches, and programming equipment on board. The ignition is fixed where the car sits. Call (202) 993-9919.

Will my old key still work after ignition replacement?

Yes — because we rekey the new cylinder to your existing key on-site. A new cylinder normally comes with its own keys, leaving you with one key for the ignition and another for the doors. We eliminate that: one key keeps operating everything. On transponder vehicles we also handle the chip programming in the same visit. See also our cylinder & ignition rekey service.

Is it the ignition cylinder or the ignition switch?

Simple rule: mechanical symptoms = cylinder, electrical symptoms = switch. Key won't turn, sticks, or spins freely — cylinder. Key turns fine but nothing happens, accessories cut out, or the engine dies while driving — switch (or starter/battery, which we also test). We diagnose before replacing anything so you never pay for the wrong part. Call (202) 993-9919.

My key sticks or is hard to turn — how urgent is it?

Urgent enough to schedule this week. A sticking key is the early warning stage — worn wafers only wear further, until the key won't turn at all or snaps off from the extra force. Repair at this stage is often possible without full replacement, making it the cheapest outcome. And don't spray WD-40 in there — it attracts dirt and makes the wear worse. Call (202) 993-9919.

How long does mobile ignition repair take?

Most ignition repairs and replacements are done on-site in 45–90 minutes, depending on how deeply the cylinder is integrated into the steering column — including rekeying to your existing key and transponder programming where required. Available 7 days a week including Sundays across DC and Maryland. Call (202) 993-9919.
